Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP)

The new Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP) provides financial supports to disabled individuals who pursue employment and job opportunities in Alberta.

This program helps eligible individuals find and secure employment. Aprpoved individuals will receive one-on-one employment and wrap-around supports. With this program, eligible Albertans with disabilities will still receive health and personal benefits regardless of their employment income.

Individuals who have been approved for the existing Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) benefit will be reassessed. Depending on their reassessment, they will either transition into the new ADAP program or remain eligible for the AISH program.

To qualify for the ADAP program you are:

  • An individual with a severe disability who is assessed as able to work.
  • The severe disability must be determined to significantly restrict but not prevent you from being employed.

Individuals who are approved for ADAP can still apply for an AISH assessment if their medical condition or ability to work changes.

Statement of disability

A certificate signed by a medical practitioner, learning disability assessment, document of federal or provincial disability assistance receipt.

Record of Employment

This is an official form, filled out by your employer, that says how long you worked and how much you earned when you worked for that employer. When you leave your job for whatever reason, your employer must give you a Record of Employment within 5 days after your last day of employment.

The Alberta Disability Assistance Program (ADAP) and the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) share the same application process.

The application will collect information from the applicant and their medical professional(s) to decide if an applicant meets the general, financial, and medical requirements.

If eligible for the general and financial requirements, an adjudicator will review the medical information to decide if an applicant qualifies for ADAP or should be referred to a panel of medical professionals to determine eligibility for AISH.

Eligible applicants will be placed into the program that best suits their unique needs and abilities.
