To be eligible, you (the child) must be either:
- under age 18, or
- under age 25 and in full-time attendance at a recognized school or university
You (the child) must also be one of the following:
- the natural child of the contributor
- a child legally adopted by the contributor while under the age of 21
- a child "legally" or "in fact" in the custody and control of the contributor while under the age of 21
Your parent or guardian must also meet one of the following situations:
- They are getting a CPP disability benefit (either the disability benefit or the post-retirement disability benefit)
- They have died and met the CPP contributory requirements for a CPP death benefit
Once you (the child) turn 25, you are no longer able to get these benefits.
Note: If you live in Quebec, you should refer to the Quebec Pension Plan (QPP) instead and contact Retraite Québec if you have any questions.
Proof of death
A document that provides the name, date, and place of death. The document must also be on official letterhead or contain a seal and provide the name and/or signature of the person or authority issuing the document. For example:
- Burial certificate or death certificate
- Certification of death from another country
- Life or Group Insurance Claim along with a statement signed by a medical doctor
- Medical Certification of Death
- Memorandum of Notification of Death issued by the Chief of National Defence Staff
- Notarial copy of Letters of Probate
- Official Death Certificate
- Official Notification from the Public Trustee for a Province
- Registration of Death
- Statement of a medical doctor, coroner, or funeral director
- Statement of Verification of Death from the Department of Veterans Affairs
Social Insurance Number
For example:
- confirmation of SIN letter
- plastic SIN card (non-expired)
Follow the instructions below depending on your situation.
For children under age 18 – if you are the child of a person CPP Disability Benefits:
- Complete the Application for Benefits for Under Age 18 Children of Canada Pension Plan Disabled Contributor (ISP1152) or log into your My Service Canada Account complete the online form
- Complete section F of the Application for Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefits (ISP1151)
- Include certified true copies of the required documentation, and
- Mail it to the closest Service Canada Centre to you. Addresses are provided on the form.
For children under age 18 – If you are the child of a CPP contributor who has died
- Complete the Application for a Canada Pension Plan Survivor's Pension and Child(ren)'s Benefits (ISP1300) or log into your My Service Canada Account and complete the online form
- Include certified true copies of the required documentation, and
- Mail it to the closest Service Canada Centre to you. Addresses are provided on the form.
For children aged 18-25 who are full-time at a recognized school or university
- Log into your My Service Canada Account (MSCA) and complete the online Canada Pension Plan Child’s Benefit form
- Complete the Declaration of Attendance at School or University (ISP1401)
- Include certified true copies of the required documentation, and
- Mail the Declaration of Attendance at School or University (ISP 1401) form and certified true copies to us or drop them off at a Service Canada office
