55 Plus Program.

Quarterly income supplement benefit for 55 of age and older living on low income.

The 55 PLUS Program provides quarterly income supplement benefits to lower-income Manitobans who are 55 years of age and over, and whose incomes are within certain levels.

Maximum quarterly benefits are $161.80 for a single person and $173.90 for each eligible person in a married or common-law relationship.

Under the Junior Component, partial benefits are available to single people with an annual income up to $9,746.40 and couples with an annual family income up to $16,255.20.

Under the Senior Component benefits are based on family composition, net family income and the type and level of benefits you receive under the federal Old Age Security program.

Eligibility for the 55 PLUS Program is based on income reported in your tax return from the previous year.

You may be eligible if:

  • You are 55 years of age or older.
  • You live in Manitoba.
  • You have a valid Manitoba Health registration number and an income within the allowable ranges.

If you receive benefits from the federal Old Age Security program, you do not need to apply. Your eligibility is automatically determined by the level of benefits you receive from the Guaranteed Income Supplement, the Allowance, or Allowance for the survivor.

If your income is slightly above the maximum, you are encouraged to apply anyway as there are some allowable deductions from gross income. The 55 Plus benefit year runs from April 1 to March 31.

Persons who receive income assistance are not eligible for 55 PLUS benefits. However, those who receive only the health care benefits portion of income assistance may be eligible.

If you receive benefits from OAS, you are not required to apply. Your eligibility is determined automatically by the level of benefits you receive from the OAS Program.

If you do not receive benefits under OAS, you must apply for 55 Plus. You can apply at any time during the benefit year. You will be required to submit a new application each year. Applications can be submitted anytime during the year.
