Homeowner Repair Program

Easy application

Tax filing not required

The Homeowner Repair Program is for homeowners in need of major repairs, disabled accessible modifications, and/or adaptations to help with seniors’ independent living. You may be able to get a loan, a portion of which you may not have to repay if you meet certain conditions. Call the Department of Social Development to learn more about what these conditions are.

The amount of forgivable loan is based upon your income and the number of repairs you need.

If you are a homeowner living on a low income in ‘substandard’ housing, you may be able to get a forgivable loan up to $15,000.

If you are a homeowner and making disabled accessible changes and other major repair items (such as structural or electrical) you may be able to get a forgivable loan up to $20,000.

If you are a senior, you may be able to get a forgivable loan for minor adaptations to facilitate independent living up to $5,000.

Landlords may be able to get a forgivable loan for disabled modifications up to $10,000.

Any repayable loan amount is at the provincial borrowing interest rate and can be repaid over a period of up to 15 years.

You may qualify for the Homeowner Repair Program if the items below are true for you:

Your household income is below the ‘housing income limits’ which vary by household size and by geographical areas within the province. You can call the Department of Social Development to learn about these limits

  • You own your home and live in it
  • Your home needs major repairs or is missing basic facilities

Changes needed for people with disabilities must be housing-related and/or give access to permanently installed, basic facilities in the home.

Adaptations for seniors must help independent living (for example, using the kitchen and getting around hallways).
