All requests for special benefits must be assessed to determine whether:
- the services or items requested are intended to meet critical emergency needs which, if not satisfied, would cause severe hardship
- You have the means or alternative ways of obtaining the services or items requested
Special benefits may be given:
- on a one-issue basis or
- on an ongoing basis to the monthly assistance cheque for up to 12 months if you have an ongoing need
For most special benefits, you will need to show the need for the benefit. If the confirmation must be written, and if it is not possible to get written confirmation, the need must be confirmed by the case manager by telephone and a note must be created in NB Case.
Case managers will decide how these benefits will get paid to you, such as on your next regular assistance cheque.
