The Prescription Drug Program (NLPDP) provides can help you pay for some prescription medications if you live in Newfoundland and Labrador. There are five main plans under the program:

  • The Foundation Plan is for people and families getting income support benefits, and some people getting services through regional health authorities.
  • The 65Plus Plan is for people 65 years and older whoa re getting Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement
  • The Access Plan is for people and families living on low incomes
  • The Assurance Plan is for people and families whose drug costs are a high percentage of their incomes (between 5% and 10%)
  • The Select Needs Plan is for people with Cystic Fibrosis and Growth Hormone Deficiency

Each of the five plans have their own eligibility criteria. Please refer to each plan to find out if it applies to your situation.

Each of the five plans have their own process for applying and receiving the benefits.

The Foundation Plan has no application. A Prescription Drug Program card is automatically issued when the Department of Health and Community Services is notified that a person is getting the services above. Once this is confirmed, you will get a letter of eligibility by mail within 7 business days.

The 65Plus Plan has no application. A Prescription Drug Program card is automatically issued when the Department of Health and Community Services is notified by Service Canada that an individual is in receipt of the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and Old Age Security benefits (OAS).

For the Access Plan you need to complete the Access Plan application form. Forms are also available at pharmacies and physician offices. You may also call 1-888-859-3535 and ask that an application be mailed to you. There is also automatic eligibility for specified dental health care services for 13-17 year olds in families who qualify for The Access Plan. The services are administered under the Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Health Program.

For the Assurance Plan you need to complete the Assurance Plan application form. Forms are also available at pharmacies and physician offices. You may also call 1-888-859-3535 and ask that an application be mailed to you.

For the Select Needs Plan no application is required. When the Department of Health and Community Services is notified by Eastern Health that a client has been diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis or Growth Hormone Deficiency, they are given eligibility to the benefits offered under this plan.
