Students are eligible for federal financial help for post-secondary studies if you meet all the following criteria:
Eligibility for Full-time post-secondary studies:
- You are a Canadian citizen (as defined in the Citizenship Act), permanent resident or have protected person status (as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act), or a person registered as an Indian (under the Indian Act).
- You are a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador.
- You have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number.
- You have demonstrated financial need.
- You pass a credit check (only for first time applicants 22 years of age or older).
- You are not in default on previous federal and/or provincial student loans.
- You are pursuing full-time studies at a designated educational institution.
- You are enrolled full-time in a program of study leading to a degree, diploma or certificate that is at least 12 weeks in duration.
Eligibility for Part-time post-secondary studies:
- You are a Canadian citizen (as defined in the Citizenship Act), permanent resident or have protected person (as defined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act), or a person registered as an Indian (under the Indian Act).
- You are a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador.
- You have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number.
- You have demonstrated financial need.
- You pass a credit check (only for first time applicants 22 years of age or older).
- You are not in default on previous federal and/or provincial student loans.
- You are pursuing part-time studies at a designated educational institution.
- You are enrolled part-time in a program of study leading to a degree, diploma or certificate that is at least 12 weeks in duration that has a full-time equivalent
- You are enrolled in 20%-59% of a full course load.
- You successfully completed all courses for which previous part-time funding was issued.
Proof of legal status
A document showing citizenship or immigration status in Canada. For example:
- citizenship certificate
- confirmation document
- record of landing, confirmation of permanent residence;
- permanent resident card
- visitor record
- temporary resident permit
- study permit
- positive notice of decision
- verification of status document
- registration date with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada
- passport
- foreign passport
Social Insurance Number
For example:
- confirmation of SIN letter
- plastic SIN card (non-expired)
Follow these steps to apply for Student Aid:
- Apply for Student Aid with one application StudentAidNL.
- Create a StudentAidNL account or
- Signin to your current account using your username and password.
- Complete the application form.
To prepare for your application, review the information required to be completed for your full-time application or your part-time application.
StudentAidNL can only process your application if:
- It is fully completed;
- It is received by the deadline date;
- All required forms are signed and submitted;
- All requested information has been submitted; and
- Your previous loans are in good standing.
Once StudentAidNL assessed your application, you will receive an email notifying you of the results. You can see your Notice of Assessment by logging into your StudentAidNL. Your Notice of Assessment details the amount, if any, of student financial assistance you are eligible to receive.
At any time, if StudentAidNL reassesses your application, you will receive an email advising you to access your account to view your revised Notice of Assessment.
