Extended Health Benefits

Easy application

Tax filing not required

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GWNT) has launched a revised Extended Health Benefits (EHB) Program for eligible residents in the province who need coverage for non-insured medical needs and conditions that are not covered by Northwest Territories provincial health plan.

Through this program, participants may receive coverage for non-insured prescription drugs, dental services, vision care, medical services and equipment.

Program coverage is divided into three categories:

  • Low-income Families
  • Seniors age 60 and over
  • High-income Families

Recipients of the previous program, Extended Health Benefits for Specified Disease Conditions must reapply for this program to maintain their insurance coverage.

To qualify for this program, you must:

  • Be a resident of the Northwest Territories
  • Hold a valid NWT Health Care Card

The benefit year is from September 1 to August 31. To maintain eligibility and coverage applicants must reapply prior to each benefit year.

Enrollment in the EHB program includes you, your spouse (if any), and dependent children aged 18 and under.

Recipients of the Métis Health Benefits Policy or Non-Insured Health Benefits Program are not eligible to participate in the EHB program.

If you have access to benefits through an employer or a similar plan, you will not be eligible to participate in the EHB program.

You can apply for the Extended Health Benefits program by completing and submitting the EHB application form:
