The NWT Senior Citizen Supplementary Benefit (SCSB) is a monthly payment of $196 to help low-income NWT Seniors to pay for living costs. The program provides a monthly cash payment to low-income Seniors who are receiving the Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or the Spouse’s Allowance (SA) from the Federal Government.

You are automatically eligible for the SCSB if you receive the federal Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), or the Federal spouse’s allowance.

If you sign up for direct deposit, the payments are automatically deposited into your bank account on the third-from-last banking day of each month. Otherwise, the payment will be sent by mail, usually during the last three banking days of each month.

To receive the NWT Senior Citizen Supplementary Benefit (SCSB):

  • You must be 60 years of age or older and resident in the NWT.
  • You must be receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or Spouse’s Allowance from the federal government.

To receive the Senior Citizen Supplementary Benefit (SCSB):

  • You must complete an initial application for the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). Each year after that, the income reported through your income tax return determines eligibility and the amount of monthly federal GIS.
