Moderate application

Need you to file taxes and apply separately

The Home Repair and Accessibility Program helps low-income Nova Scotians pay for essential home repairs and accessibility upgrades. This support allows seniors and people with disabilities to stay in their homes safely and comfortably. Funding is available for emergency repairs, such as fixing plumbing, heating, or electrical issues, and for accessibility upgrades like adding ramps, grab bars, or wheelchair-accessible bathrooms.

Qualified applicants can receive up to $18,000 for repairs and up to $16,000 for accessibility improvements. You can apply anytime.

Eligibility for the Home Repair and Accessibility Program includes the following:

  • Homeowners: You own and live in your home in Nova Scotia and have a household income below the program’s income limits.
  • Accessibility Needs: Accessibility upgrades must support a resident with a disability or a senior who requires modifications to stay in their home.
  • Landlords and Shelters: Landlords providing affordable housing and shelters offering emergency or supportive housing may also be eligible.

Social Insurance Number

For example:

  • confirmation of SIN letter
  • plastic SIN card (non-expired)

To apply for the Home Repair and Accessibility Program:

  1. Contact the Program: Start by contacting the Home Repair and Accessibility Program to discuss your repair and accessibility needs.
  2. Complete the Application: Fill out the application form and gather any required supporting documents, which may include income information or proof of home ownership.
  3. Submit Your Application: You can mail your completed application or deliver it to a regional housing office in person.
  4. Application Review and Inspection: The Department of Growth and Development will review your application and confirm your eligibility. An inspector may visit your home to confirm the needed repairs and accessibility upgrades.
  5. Receive Approval: If approved, you’ll receive a bid package outlining required repairs and/or accessibility upgrades you need to get quotes. Submit contractor quotes to the Department of Growth and Development for review.

The review process for urgent repairs takes about 1–2 days, while non-emergency requests may take several months. There is no fee to apply.
