Increase in fuel tax exemption under the Nova Scotia Indian Fuel Tax Exemption Program

This is a document which will let you know how to request an increase to the base fuel tax exemption under the Nova Scotia Indian Fuel Tax Exemption Program or get fuel tax back when the base amount is exceeded.

You may request an increase in the 400 litre base amount when you first apply to the Nova Scotia Indian Fuel Tax Exemption Program, or any time after you are enrolled in the program.

Application forms for an increase to the base amount are available at Access Nova Scotia, at Band Council Offices or on the Service Nova Scotia and Internal Services website.

The 400 litre base amount is available every month and you do not need to re-apply for this exemption in the future. You do need to apply for an addition to the 400 litre base every three years, which is forwarded in the form of a renewal notice 30 days prior to your expiry date.

Certificate of Indian Status

A document showing that you are registered as an Indian under the Indian Act. For example, a Secure Certificate of Indian Status (secure status card) or a Certificate of Indian Status (status card).

To apply for the Nova Scotia Indian Fuel Tax Exemption Request for Increased Exemption you will need to provide Complete the registration application form.

  1. Take your application, Nova Scotia Driver’s Licence and Certificate of Indian Status card to the Band Office.
  2. The Band membership clerk certifies your application.
  3. Send your certified application by mail, fax or email.
