The Extended Health Benefits (EHB) Full Coverage Plan for Chronic Health Conditions offers insurance coverage in the following areas:

  • Medical Travel
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Medical Supplies and Equipment

The Department of Health offers Extended Health Benefits (EHB) to support the health and well-being of Nunavut residents with a chronic health condition who need additional health care services not covered by the Nunavut Health Care Plan.

The Extended Health Benefits (EHB) is also offered to those not covered or fully covered by their third-party insurance like Health Canada’s Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB), or employer-provided health plans.

To be considered eligible for the Extended Health Benefits Full Coverage Plan for Chronic Health Conditions:

  • You must be a Nunavut resident.
  • You must be enrolled in the Nunavut Health Care Plan.

You are not eligible for Extended Health Benefits (EHB) coverage when any of the following conditions apply:

  • You choose not to participate in the third-party plan as a whole.
  • You choose not to participate in that category of benefits under the third-party plan.
  • You are already insured by a third-party plan that offers these benefits.

Health card

For example:

  • valid health card with no photo, name and address
  • valid health card with photo, name and address
  • MCP (Medical Care Plan) number
  • Valid ambulance/dental services card
  • Department of Immigration, Skills and Labour identification number
  • Department of Immigration, Skills and Labour file number (Income Support Card).

To make a claim for:

Prescription Drugs

  • Tell your pharmacist that you are covered by the EHB program, and they will call the Nunavut Health Insurance Office to verify that you are enrolled.
  • The cost of your prescription will be billed directly to EHB.
  • If you are filling a prescription outside of Nunavut, you will have to pay for your own prescription drugs.
  • If you have to pay for your prescription up front, send your original receipts and an EHB Claim Form to the following address:
