The Supplement for Handicapped Children provides monthly financial support to families who have children living with a disability. The impairment or mental function disability must be expected to significantly limit the child in carrying out life habits for at least 1 year.

The supplement for handicapped children $205 a month for all children who meet the eligibility criteria, regardless of family income or type of disability. That amount is not taxable and is indexed (adjusted) in January of each year.

To be considered eligible for this program, you must apply for and receive the Family Allowance benefit.

To be eligible for this supplement, you must meet the following requirements:

Proof of  residency in Province

For example:

  • lease agreement
  • rent receipt
  • household bill
    • gas
    • electricity
    • cable television
    • telephone
  • driver's license
  • vehicle registration or car insurance
  • membership in social or professional organization
  • Other:
    • bank information
    • employment information

Social Insurance Number

For example:

  • confirmation of SIN letter
  • plastic SIN card (non-expired)

The application for the supplement for handicapped children has two parts:

  1. The Parent's part, which must be completed by one of the parents and includes an appendix concerning the child's educational achievement.
  2. The Professional's part, which must be completed by the professional (physician, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, etc.) who has assessed or treated your child and is most familiar with the child's condition.
