Student Training and Employment Program (STEP)

The Student Training and Employment Program (STEP) provides students with a way to earn a wage while gaining work experience in their field of study. Students can obtain opportunities across the Yukon in public and private sectors. Full-time summer employment period runs from May 1 to September 1 (dates are flexible).

STEP program wages are at least $23.07 per hour and offer between 450-600 hours of employment. As education levels increases so do the wages of the student employee.

  • $23.07 per hour upon completion of 1st year
  • $24.72 per hour upon completion of 2nd year
  • $26.46 per hour upon completion of 3rd year
  • $28.30 per hour upon completion of 4th year or higher

Employers other than the Government of Yukon may pay higher wages.

To be eligible for a STEP job you must meet the residency and academic requirements note below:

Residency requirements:

  • be a Yukon resident;
  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada; and
  • have resided in the Yukon for 2 consecutive years immediately prior to the start of classes this academic year; or
  • be eligible for the Yukon Grant or the Student Training Allowance.

Academic requirements:

  • currently be enrolled in full-time undergraduate studies in a minimum 2-year program that will result in a certificate, diploma or degree; and
  • return to full-time studies in the fall; or
  • graduate this current academic year.

You cannot be a member of the employer or direct supervisor’s immediate family. Students can only work the same STEP position for two summers.

Proof of  residency in Province/ Territory

  • household bill

  • driver's license
  • vehicle registration or car insurance
  • membership in social or professional organization
  • Other:
    • bank information
    • employment information

Proof of school enrollment

For example:

Post-secondary student ID #, letter of acceptance, Post-secondary degree, Canada Student Loan, Provincial Student Loan.

Proof of legal status

A document showing citizenship or immigration status in Canada. For example:

  • citizenship certificate
  • confirmation document
  • record of landing, confirmation of permanent residence;
    • permanent resident card
    • visitor record
    • temporary resident permit
    • study permit
  • positive notice of decision
  • verification of status document
  • registration date with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada
  • passport
  • foreign passport
