Ontario Guaranteed Annual Income System (GAINS) helps Ontario seniors living on a low income by providing a monthly, non-taxable payment. Starting January 2023 until December 2023, the maximum GAINS payment has doubled to a maximum of $166 per month for single seniors and $332 per month for couples. Previously your monthly GAINS payment would have been between $2.50 and $83.00, depending on your income.

The Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax Credit can help, if you are a low to moderate income seniors with medical expenses. It can give you refundable personal income tax credit of up to 25% on expenses up to $6,000, which may be reduced based on your family income.

The Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit is a new refundable tax credit for the costs of certain renovation expenses to an eligible dwelling to establish a secondary unit. The secondary unit must allow a senior or an adult who is eligible for the disability tax credit to live with a qualifying relative. This amount may be claimed on your tax return (starting from the 2023 tax return).

You can claim up to $50,000 in qualifying expenditures for each qualifying renovation that is completed. The tax credit is 15% of your costs, up to a maximum of $7,500, for each claim you are eligible to make.
